What is a word counter?

A word counter measures the length of text. Paste a draft or type directly to see words, characters, sentences, paragraphs and estimated reading and speaking times without submitting text to a server.

How word counting works

Words are non-empty tokens separated by whitespace after trimming. Multiple spaces, tabs and line breaks do not add words. Hyphenated words and contractions without spaces count as one token. Languages without whitespace word boundaries may not be counted meaningfully.

Word count vs character count

Characters use JavaScript string length (UTF-16 code units), including spaces and line breaks. Characters without spaces removes all whitespace, including tabs and newlines. Some emoji count as more than one character under this convention.

Sentences and paragraphs

Sentences are non-empty letter-or-number segments separated by periods, exclamation marks or question marks; an unfinished final segment counts too. This heuristic can split abbreviations and decimals and is not linguistic parsing. Paragraphs are non-empty blocks separated by blank lines; a single line break does not start another paragraph.

How reading and speaking time are estimated

Reading time assumes 200 words per minute and speaking time assumes 130 words per minute. Empty text shows zero minutes; shorter passages show Under 1 minute; otherwise estimates round to the nearest whole minute. Actual pace depends on the reader, pauses and complexity. For example, 400 words gives about 2 minutes reading or 3 minutes speaking.

Why word count matters

Use counts to check assignment limits, shorten a draft or plan a speech. Check the destination’s own counting rules for strict limits: different editors may count symbols or hyphenated terms differently. Top words groups lowercase tokens, strips surrounding punctuation, excludes a small English stopword list and shows up to ten terms; it does not assess writing quality.

How to use

  1. Type text or use Paste. If clipboard permission is blocked, paste directly into the text box.
  2. Review live counts, estimated times and top words.
  3. Copy your text or Clear to reset all statistics. Text is not saved automatically.

Frequently asked questions

Is my text uploaded or saved?

No. Analysis runs in your browser and the tool does not store your text. Custom analytics receives only a broad word-count bucket, never text or keywords.

Do spaces count as characters?

Yes in Characters. Characters without spaces excludes all whitespace, including tabs and line breaks.

Are sentence counts exact?

No. Sentence-ending punctuation provides a conservative heuristic; abbreviations, decimals and unusual punctuation can change the result.

Why can Paste or Copy fail?

Your browser may require a secure connection and clipboard permission. Use your keyboard or device menu if clipboard access is unavailable.
