Supported images & safety limits

Up to 20 files, 25 MB each and 100 MB per input/output batch. Still images only, up to 12 megapixels and 8,192 pixels per edge. Decoding is sequential in a worker with a 256 MiB WASM memory cap and 60-second timeout per file. HDR and wide-gamut content is converted to 8-bit SDR/sRGB JPEG; appearance can change. Original dimensions are retained.

What is a JXL file?

JXL is the file extension for JPEG XL, an image format supporting lossy and lossless coding, transparency and other advanced features. This converter accepts ordinary still JPEG XL images and creates standard .jpg files for broader compatibility.

How to convert JXL to JPG

Add your JXL files, select JPEG quality and a background color, then download the converted JPG images. Conversion starts automatically and changing settings reconverts the batch sequentially. Convert to JPG can retry a cancelled or failed conversion. Download All downloads individual files, not a ZIP.

JXL vs JPG/JPEG

JPG and JPEG refer to the same common output format. JPEG XL is a different format and cannot be converted simply by renaming its extension. The decoder reads JXL pixels before the browser encodes a new JPEG.

Why can the JPG be larger than the JXL?

JPEG XL can store an image more efficiently than JPEG. A larger JPG is a normal conversion result, especially at higher JPEG quality. The size comparison reports actual file sizes and does not promise compression savings.

Transparency, color and quality

JPEG has no alpha channel, so transparent areas use your chosen white, black or custom background. Output is 8-bit SDR/sRGB. HDR, wide-gamut colors and fine details may change, and even quality 100 is not a lossless conversion. The original JXL is unchanged.

Local processing and limits

Your images are processed in your browser and are never uploaded. The JPEG XL decoder is downloaded from this site only when conversion begins. Limits are 20 files, 25 MB per file, 100 MB per input/output batch, 12 megapixels and 8,192 pixels per edge. A disposable worker, a 256 MiB decoder memory cap and a 60-second timeout bound each decode. Some complex images can exceed browser memory even within these limits.

Which browsers support JPEG XL?

Native JPEG XL support varies. This tool uses a WebAssembly decoder rather than relying on native JXL display support. A browser with WebAssembly, Web Workers and JPEG canvas encoding is required. Animated and multi-frame JXL files are rejected.

How to use

  1. Upload one or more .jxl images.
  2. Choose JPEG quality and a background for any transparent pixels.
  3. Review the actual output sizes and download individual JPGs or Download All.

Frequently asked questions

Is JXL conversion private?

Yes. File bytes, decoded pixels and output images stay in your browser. The decoder itself is downloaded as a site asset; analytics excludes filenames, sizes, dimensions, colors and image contents.

Does JPEG support transparency?

No. Transparent areas are flattened onto the selected background before JPEG encoding.

Does converting JXL to JPG reduce quality?

JPEG encoding is lossy, so detail and colors may change. Quality 100 does not make the conversion lossless. Keep the original JXL if you need it.

Can I convert animated JPEG XL?

No. This version rejects animated and multi-frame JXL images instead of silently exporting one frame.

Are image dimensions preserved?

Yes, for accepted images. This tool does not resize the image; images above the safety limits are rejected.
