What is a Date Difference Calculator?

A date difference calculator measures the time between two calendar dates. Choose a start and end date to see complete years and months, remaining days, and the same interval expressed as day-based totals.

How is the difference between two dates calculated?

The calculator counts complete calendar years, then months, then remaining days. When an anniversary falls beyond the end of a month, it uses that month's last day. For example, 31 January to 29 February 2024 is one complete month.

Calendar difference vs total days

Months have different lengths, so a calendar month is not a fixed number of days. Total Months counts complete calendar months. Total Weeks shows seven-day periods and leftover days. Hours and minutes multiply calendar days by 24 and 1,440; they are not elapsed clock time across daylight saving changes.

Inclusive vs exclusive date calculation

Exclusive mode subtracts the start date from the end date: 1 January to 2 January is one day, and equal dates give zero days. Include end date adds one to the total days, counting both endpoints. It also updates weeks, hours and minutes. The calendar years/months/days breakdown and complete months remain unchanged.

Leap years and date calculations

February has 29 days in leap years. The calculation uses actual calendar dates at UTC midnight so leap days are counted and local daylight saving changes cannot add or remove a day. A 29 February anniversary falls on 28 February in a non-leap year.

Worked example: exclusive and inclusive days

From 1 January 2024 to 31 January 2024, the exclusive result is 30 days. With Include end date enabled, the result is 31 days because both 1 January and 31 January count. Inclusive mode adds one to the day-based totals; the calendar years, months and days breakdown does not change.

Common uses

Compare project duration, contract periods, travel dates, countdowns and planned events. You can also compare past milestones or age-related dates. Choose inclusive counting when both the first and last dates belong to the period you want to count.

How to use

  1. Choose Start Date and End Date. Both default to your local today.
  2. Turn on Include end date if both endpoints should count toward day-based totals.
  3. Select Calculate Difference. Reset restores today's dates and exclusive mode.

Frequently asked questions

How many days are between two dates?

Enter the dates and select Calculate Difference. Total Days shows the number of calendar days between them; inclusive mode adds one.

Does the calculator include the end date?

Include end date is off by default. Turn it on to count both endpoints in day-based totals. Same-date ranges then count as one day.

How are leap years handled?

Leap days count as real calendar days. For example, 28 February to 1 March is two days in 2024 and one day in 2023. February 29 anniversaries use February 28 in non-leap years.

Why can months and days differ from total days?

A month can contain 28, 29, 30 or 31 days. The calendar breakdown counts complete years and months, while Total Days measures the whole interval directly without assuming a fixed month length.

Can I calculate past dates?

Yes. Both dates can be in the past or future. End Date must be on or after Start Date; reversed ranges show a validation message.

Does it count weekends?

Yes. All calendar days count, including Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. This is not a business-day calculator.

What is inclusive date counting?

Inclusive counting counts both the start and end dates. For example, 1 January through 2 January is two inclusive days rather than a one-day exclusive difference.
