Good visual quality with a reduced color palette.

File limits & processing details

Up to 20 files, 25 MB each and 100 MB per batch. Each GIF is limited to 4 megapixels, 200 frames and a safe decoded workload.

Animation, frame timing, transparency and dimensions are preserved. Actual savings depend on the source GIF.

Your GIFs are processed locally in your browser and are never uploaded to our servers.

What is a GIF Compressor?

A GIF compressor reduces the storage size of static or animated GIF images. This tool re-encodes every frame with a smaller color palette, reports the measured result and keeps the original whenever the new file is not smaller.

How GIF compression works

GIF stores frames as palette-based images with up to 256 colors. The browser decodes the complete animation, builds a shared reduced palette and writes a new GIF while retaining frame order, frame delays, looping, transparency and image dimensions.

Why animated GIF files can be large

Every animation frame adds image data. Long animations, large dimensions, many colors and frequent changes between frames can all increase file size, even when the GIF format stores only changed areas efficiently.

Does GIF compression reduce quality?

It can. Balanced mode uses up to 96 colors for moderate palette reduction. Maximum mode uses up to 32 colors for stronger reduction, so gradients and detailed scenes may show more visible changes.

How color reduction affects GIF size

A smaller palette needs fewer distinct color values and can make frame data easier to compress. Results vary with the artwork and animation, so the tool shows the actual output size rather than promising a fixed percentage.

Can animation be preserved?

Yes. The compressor processes all readable frames rather than capturing only the first one. It keeps their order and GIF timing values, preserves the loop setting and retains transparent pixels supported by GIF.

How to reduce GIF file size

Choose Balanced or Maximum mode, then select or drop up to 20 GIF files. Review the measured size and percentage saved before downloading one result or the completed batch. Maximum mode is useful when stronger color reduction is acceptable.

Is browser-based GIF compression private?

The files are validated, decoded, re-encoded, previewed and downloaded locally in your browser. GIF bytes, filenames, file sizes, dimensions, frame counts, metadata and compression ratios are not uploaded or included in analytics.

How to use

  1. Choose Balanced for good visual quality or Maximum for stronger color reduction.
  2. Drop GIF files into the upload area, or choose Select GIF files.
  3. Review each measured result, then download one compressed GIF or the completed batch.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compress a GIF?

Choose a compression mode, then drop a GIF into the tool or select it from your device. The browser processes every frame locally and displays the measured result before download.

Will the animation still work?

Yes. The output remains a GIF and retains the animation frames, their order, their timing values and the source loop setting.

Does GIF compression reduce quality?

Palette reduction can change colors. Balanced mode retains up to 96 colors, while Maximum mode uses up to 32 colors for potentially smaller files and a more visible change.

Can I compress multiple GIFs?

Yes. You can process up to 20 GIFs sequentially, subject to the 25 MB per-file, 100 MB batch, 4 megapixel, 200-frame and decoded-workload safety limits.

Are my GIFs uploaded?

No. Validation, frame decoding, palette generation, GIF encoding, previews and downloads all happen in your browser. No image upload or external processing API is used.

Why is my GIF file so large?

Large dimensions, long duration, many frames, detailed movement and complex colors can all add data. GIF is also less efficient than modern video formats for photographic animation.

Can transparent GIFs be compressed?

Yes. Fully transparent GIF pixels are retained during decoding and re-encoding. As with the GIF format generally, transparency is one-bit rather than a smooth alpha channel.

Can I compress GIFs on mobile?

Yes. Select GIFs through your mobile browser's file picker. Processing speed and available memory vary by device, so the tool applies conservative animation limits.

Why did my GIF not get smaller?

The source may already use an efficient palette or compact frame encoding. If the recompressed file is not smaller, the tool retains the original and reports that no smaller output was achieved.
